What We Do
BIS Certification
BIS operates a Product Certification Scheme under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules thereunder and BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The presence of a Standard Mark (popularly known as ISI mark) on a product indicates its conformity to the relevant Indian Standard.
Before granting a license to any manufacturer, BIS ascertains the availability of the required infrastructure and the capability of the manufacturer to produce and test the product conforming to the relevant Indian Standard. Samples drawn from the production line as well as from the market are tested in BIS laboratories/ recognized independent laboratories to ensure conformance of the product to the relevant Indian Standard. BIS also conducts surveillance visits to ensure conformance of licensees’ products to the relevant Indian Standard.
The certification scheme is voluntary in nature, except for 211 product standards that have been made mandatory by the Central Government on consideration of the health and safety of the consumer.

During the year, BIS worked towards specifically addressing various national priorities and other Govt. initiatives in the areas of formulation of standards in twelve champion service sectors, medical textiles, testing of quality of piped drinking water, mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery to name a few. In standards development, BIS continued to address issues of technology changes and advancements, climate change, environment and energy conservation, conditions of health and safety and facilitation of trade. In the area of conformity assessment, BIS worked towards making the processes simpler and faster. BIS maintained satisfactory progress in all its activities during the year.

Documents Required

Process
The licence known as IS FMCS is given to foreign producers in exchange for their adherence to Indian Standards. You must successfully finish the BIS certification process in order to sell certain products in the Indian market; otherwise, you will be unable to do so.

License means a license granted under Section 13 of BIS Act 2016 to use a specified Standard Mark in relation to any goods or article which conforms to a standard.
Under the Scheme-I of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, the license to use Standard Mark shall be granted initially for not less than one year and up to two years. The license may be renewed for a further period of not less than one year and up to five years.
Products are brought under compulsory certification by the Central Government as per the provision of the BIS Act, 2016 or other Acts. Detail of products that are covered under compulsory BIS certification is available on the official website so if your product is on this list, it is compulsory for you to get a BIS license for it.
For obtaining a BIS license, the manufacturer must have requisite manufacturing infrastructure, appropriate process controls, quality control and testing capabilities for the product as per relevant Indian Standard Specification (ISS). The product shall also conform to all requirements laid down in the ISS.
